Foods That Should Not Be Stored in the Fridge

Refrigerator is one amongst the greatest invention of all times. It is indeed a must-have home utility item that prevents your food from spoiling. But, do you know that there are some foodstuffs that don’t respond well to lower temperatures and hence they lose their flavor when kept in the refrigerator. Sometimes these food, even get spoiled and you should avoid keeping them in the fridge. Let us have a quick look at them.

Tomatoes:

All homemakers without exception keep tomatoes inside the fridge. But both the ripening as well as the taste of tomatoes will have a negative impact when kept in the fridge. Incredible though it may sound, but the hard tomatoes can last up to 7-10 days in the moderate temperature. If you want to keep them in the fridge even then, you should take them out a couple of hours prior to consuming them.

Onions:

Onions should be stored in warmer temperatures rather and the place should be away from the direct sunlight. They become softer and lose their crispness when stored in the fridge. That apart, if you store them in the fridge all the other things in close vicinity will smell awful.

Bananas:

Although bananas are available all through the year, but they thrive well in a hotter climate only. Do not store bananas in the fridge because they would not get ripe and will turn brown instead. In the low temperature enzymes responsible for ripening them remain inactive at low temperatures. On the contrary, enzymes that cause their browning are activated at low temperatures which result in damaging their cells. If you store them in the fridge they turn black after some days and remain unripe. Also, if you do not want to them to ripen faster you should not store them close to other fruits.

Honey:

Have you seen crystallized honey that has unpleasant texture. If you store honey in the fridge, it will not affect its shelf life. But, yes, honey gets crystallized faster when stored in the fridge. Honey has a high sugar content and should not be stored in the fridge as it can last for a long time at room temperature.

Cucumbers:

Cucumbers get adversely affected when stored in the fridge. These become seriously injured on the cold temperature. When they are injured, their skin gets damaged and pitted. Cucumbers should be stored at the room temperature and away from other fruits.

Citrus fruits:

Lemons, lime and oranges get adversely affected by the cold temperature. Not only this, cold temperature also affects the ripening process and dark spots begin to appear. If you do not want to make them taste less avoid storing them in the fridge.
